The Business I’m Probably Not Going to Start
I notice businesses everywhere.
Most of them I have no intention of starting.
Here’s one.
A while back, I started noticing garage doors.
Not new ones.
Old ones.
There are thousands of perfectly good homes with garage doors that are faded, chalky, dated or just the wrong color.
The door itself works fine.
It just looks tired.
Replacing a garage door can cost thousands of dollars. And while a house painter will certainly paint one, it’s usually just another item on a much larger job.
So I started wondering:
What if there were a company that only painted garage doors?
Not a general painting company.
Garage doors.
Simple pricing.
A handful of proven colors.
Maybe you upload a photo of your house, choose a color and get a quote without anyone coming out.
Schedule it online.
A truck pulls up, cleans and preps the door, paints it and leaves.
Done.
Could that be a business?
Maybe.
I haven’t researched it enough to know.
There could be problems with different door materials or finishes. Maybe people wouldn't pay enough to make the economics work. Maybe painters already do this cheaply enough that there isn't much of an opportunity.
Those are the questions that separate an interesting idea from an actual opportunity.
But this is the part of business I enjoy.
Noticing something that seems a little off.
Something people have gotten used to.
Then asking:
Could there be a simpler way?
Sometimes the answer leads to a business.
Sometimes it leads to a product.
Sometimes someone else is better positioned to pursue it.
And plenty of times the idea probably belongs right where it started—in a notebook.
That’s okay.
I don't think every idea needs to become a business.
Sometimes it's worth exploring simply because it helps you get better at seeing possibilities.
I probably won't start a garage door painting company.
But the next time I drive past a faded garage door, I'll probably still wonder if someone should.
